ISB celebrates Tamil Day

The Indian School Bahrain (ISB) celebrated Tamil Day at its campus in Isa Town on Tuesday. The programme was organised by the Department of Tamil marking Thai Pongal, a four-day festival which according to the Tamil calendar is usually celebrated from January 14 to January 17. Chief Guest Santy Excavation & Construction WLL Managing Director R.Ramesh inaugurated the Tamil Day by lighting the lamp. Bala Ramamurthy, Head of Compliance and AML at Ithmaar Bank, was the keynote speaker. Bharathi Tamil Sangam founder Mohammed Hussain Malim, ISB Asst.Secretary Premalatha NS, S Inayadullah, Principal VR Palaniswamy, Vice-Principals Anand Nair, Satheesh G, Vinod S, Head Teachers, Heads of Departments, Coordinators, staff and students attended. The programme commenced with the national anthems followed by the recital of Holy Quran. Head Teachers(Activity) Sreekanth S and Junith CM, HoD Trévise Michel, Tamil Teacher Rajeswari M and Bandmaster Haji Paul coordinated the programme. Chief Guest R.Ramesh and ISB Asst.Secretary Premalatha spoke about the beauty and the importance of Tamil language in the world and how the festival of Pongal is celebrated over the years in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Teacher Rajeswari M welcomed the gathering and presented the departmental report. Students of VI to IX presented Tamil Thai Vazhthu (Invocation to Mother Tamil) and Tamil Mozhi Vazhthu for which music was composed by Bandmaster Haji Paul. In addition to these songs, the invocation dance and Bharathiyar song were also performed by students. Traditional l folk dances like Kummi Paattu, kolattam, oyilattam, karakattam, mayilattam, puliyatam, silambattam and jallikattu were staged. Class X students performed Villu Pattu, a Tamil traditional story telling with folk music. Competitions were held in recitation of Bharathiyar and Bharathidasan poems, Tirukkural, essay writing and speech in Tamil. Winners were awarded certificates and trophies.
